DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM

Mirtazapine is in a class of antidepressants tetracyclic called of treatments who includes maprotiline (Ludiomil). Although the definite mechanism of action of this class of antidepressants is not known, they augment the quantity of norepinephrine and of serotonin in the brain. Norepinephrine and serotonin are neurotransmitters, chemicals which nerves use to announce the one with other one. Mirtazapine also acts as antihistamine one similar in diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Mirtazapine was approved by FDA in 1996.
